Program: MD Candidate, School of Medicine, OHSU

Hometown: Portland, OR

My passion in medicine lies in primary care and helping patients who struggle to navigate through the health care system due to cultural and language barriers. I deeply resonate with the IHI Open School's mission of applying improvement science principles and advocating for a work culture of joy in health care. Outside of medicine, I’m a classical music pianist, a coffee shop explorer, and food lover!

Tori Scholl, Co-President
Program: MPA, Health Administration, PSU

Hometown: Spokane, WA

My passion for list-making and organizing everything in sight ultimately launched my journey into health care administration and improvement science. When I’m not at work, in class, or keeping busy with Chapter responsibilities, I enjoy some casual indoor gardening, miscellaneous arts and crafts, and spontaneous nap sessions.

My passion for healthcare has led me to IHI and has given me the opportunity to be part a team that is passionate about its mission. On my off time, I like to spend time with my family and friends- this includes my parrot daughter Athena. I enjoy casual hiking and taking advantage of Portland’s finest food carts.

Most recently, I was a Project Coordinator with the research operations improvement team, at the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute. I hold a Master of Science degree in Operations Management, and I’m currently pursuing a Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Management. I want to make a more meaningful difference in my work, and I trust that I can utilize my skills to influence change in the health care delivery system.

Rachel Palmer, Co-Project Management Coach

Hometown: Mt. Shasta, CA

I received my Bachelor’s in Public Health and Sociology, and I am working towards my MPH in Health Policy & Management. I’ve volunteered with several community health non-profits and am currently working in healthcare administration at PSU’s Center for Student Health & Counseling and volunteering in community health non-profits. I hope to use my degree and experience in the IHI Chapter to improve the healthcare system and health policy at the local, state, or national level.

Kanwar Thind, Co-Learning Coordinator
Program: MPH: Health Mgmt. & Policy, OHSU-PSU

Hometown: Everett, WA

I completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Physiology from the University of Washington, with a minor in bioethics. I'm passionate about learning how system-level change can be used to improve our lives. My previous work experience has been focused on clinical care, and I hope to continue those experiences as I pursue a career in medicine. I am interested to see how the field adopts public health and policy knowledge in the future to improve population metrics. I hope to be a part of that change.

When I'm not helping with IHI, I'm coaching high school cross-country or scribing in the ER. I love being outside, and try and hit the trails and get outdoors when I have free time. I'm passionate about rural outreach & the power of narratives.

I am a second-year medical student at OHSU and initially got interested in Quality Improvement Science through our Inter-professional Curriculum. As a future physician, I hope to continue to obtain more skills to improve patient care and safety within a constantly changing medical system. On my free time, I like to spend time with family and friends, go to the movies/concerts, and travel.

I grew up on the Oregon coast, so I'm not deterred by bad weather and I love being outdoors - I'm very excited to hike in the Gorge! You're most likely to find me where there's loud country music, but I'm really always game for any type of concert. I have a reputation for being a workaholic and sleep deprived but feel free to stop me on campus to chat.

Sara Miller, Program Rep, Nursing
Program: Family Nurse Practitioner, OHSU

Hometown: Canton, CT

I am dedicated to working with underserved populations and have interests in global health, women’s health, cross-cultural healthcare, and social justice.  I have worked as nurse in a Cardiac ICU and as a staff and charge nurse at a bilingual community health center in Oregon that primarily serves farmworkers and recent Mexican immigrants.  In my free time, I enjoy spending as much time as possible outside (rock climbing, hiking, hammocking) as well as cooking and eating delicious food with my family and friends.

My passion for medicine and healthcare has led me to IHI. I believe that healthcare should provide for the needs of the individual in a manner that is affordable and available to all. I am currently an undergraduate at Portland State University studying Biology. I plan to pursue medical school after my undergraduate. Outside of my academics and research, I enjoy volunteering, bouldering, Ultimate Frisbee, and photography.

My wife and I moved to Portland about 7 years ago to attend PSU and get out of our lackluster hometown. Since then we've both fallen in love with the city. We currently live in SE Portland with our border collie mix, Sally, and we like to snowboard, hike, see live music, and spend time with our friends and family. I've recently taken a job with Moda health and plan on finishing my MPA sometime in the next year and a half or so. Healthy people and healthy living are two of my passions, and I want to be a part of what helps create a change in our currently flawed healthcare system.
