Program: MPH Candidate, OHSU-PSU School of Public Health.

My name is Laken Harrel and I moved to Portland from eastern Washington in 2010. I completed a Bachelors of Science in Psychology at Portland State University and I am currently pursuing a Masters of Public Health in Health Management and Policy at the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health. I decided to pursue a degree focusing on policy in order to improve our health care system after working for Providence Health and Services for three years in an administrative capacity and seeing the inefficiencies firsthand. I enjoy hiking, reading, and entertaining my loved ones at home

Program:MD candidate, OHSU School of Medicine.

My passion for list-making and organizing everything in sight ultimately launched my journey into health care administration and improvement science. When I’m not at work, in class, or keeping busy with Chapter responsibilities, I enjoy some casual indoor gardening, miscellaneous arts and crafts, and spontaneous nap sessions.

Hi my name is Rebecca. I am a doctorate of nursing practice (DNP) student. I just graduated from the OHSU FNP program this past June. I have been a nurse for the past 6 years for Legacy. I am originally from Southern Oregon, moved to Michigan for nursing school and then found myself in Portland for my current nursing job. My interest in trying to improve healthcare for people of all backgrounds has led me to being involved in IHI. I am a third year Biology major at Portland State University and plan on attending medical school in the future. My main areas of interest within medicine are emergency medicine and neurology. At PSU I am a chemistry/calculus tutor, an orientation leader, and a leader in many of the student groups.

Christina Nguyen, Projects Committee Co-Chair.

Program:MPH Candidate. OHSU-PSU School of Public Health.

I am a PSU alumni with a BS in Organismal Biology. Currently, I am in my second year in the MPH Health Management & Policy Track through the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health. A passion of mine is to break down the walls between different disciplines within the health care field, as I am an ardent supporter of interprofessional approaches and collaborations in the delivery and maintenance of care. I am excited to be part of the IHI Open School Chapter because of its mission of applying improvement science and advocating for a work environment that is sustainable, happy, and healthy. Outside of school I enjoy watching tv shows like Supernatural, reading mystery novels, and spending time with my family.

Program: MPA:HA Candidate, Portland State University

I am passionate about learning the tools to develop solutions that will improve our health care system. I am innately a helper and, in my experience, working with patients , I have always enjoyed providing a patient centered care.  I have a Bachelors in Pharmacy from India and worked in home infusion and long term care pharmacies for 3 years before embarking on my masters degree.I am currently doing my MPA:HA at PSU. Engaging with IHI team, I would like to understand the improvement science methodologies and explore how I can utilize them in the real-world settings. Outside of school and work , I enjoy long walks with family, gardening and cooking.

Masooma Jafari, Projects Committee Co-Chair
Program: MPH Candidate, OHSU-PSU School of Public Health.

My name is Masooma Jafari. I started my journey into the health field with obtaining a Pharm.D degree from Kabul University in Afghanistan. I worked as a pharmacist and pharmacy supervisor for two and a half years in community and hospital pharmacies. I also used to teach at health institutions in Kabul. Interacting with patients and healthcare professionals directly, observing the health problems and the results of the policies, made me think of the need for policy changes. So, I got a scholarship and flew to the U.S. to study Public Health and currently, I am a student of the MPH/Health Management Policy track at OHSU-PSU School of Public Health. I heard about the IHI Open School Chapter from friends and since I am starting my second year in the fall, I thought it would be a great opportunity to get more involved with health professionals and help other students. So, I am looking forward to being part of the IHI Open School Chapter work and help people

Phuong Phan, Pharmacy Rep
Program: PharmD Candidate, College of Pharmacy OSU/ OHSU

I have a strong interest in learning about quality and patient care improvement, especially for the underserved population. Before holding this position, I was one of the Initiative Chairs of the Underserved Committee at Oregon State University - College of Pharmacy. This allowed me to have a better understanding of healthcare disparities that can go unnoticed. Getting involved in the IHI Open School is a wonderful way for me to learn more about ways to provide better care not only at individual level but also at population level. Besides school, work and IHI responsibilities, I am a casual swimmer, an adventurous hiker and a food explorer.

Kristen Fernandez-Kong, Projects Committee Co-Chair
Program: PMHNP Master’s to DNP Candidate, OHSU School of Nursing

Aloha! My name is Kristen. I am in OHSU’s Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) Master’s to Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program. After growing up in Hawaii, I studied psychology & biology at Cornell College in Iowa as well as conducted research with Cornell’s Body Dissatisfaction & Eating Disorder Research team. Upon discovering the PMHNP profession, I knew I had to be one! This led me to pursuing the Accelerated BSN at OHSU. I am passionate about integrating biology & psychology in collaborating with diverse individuals towards achieving holistic wellbeing. Furthermore, OHSU’s Community Organizing for Health Equity course opened my eyes to the value of interdisciplinary collaboration with communities to improve social determinants of health equity & inspired me to learn how to apply these skills towards quality improvement through IHI. Cheers to positive changes! My passions are traveling, beaches, yoga, & chilling with Netflix.
